I found Zhora's accident report from his last car again today. He showed it to me a couple days ago, but I just skimmed it and looked at the diagram. Today I read it thoroughly and made some sense of the broken English and the margins that had been damaged by photocopy.
He was traveling with a Yuliya -- he cites their addresses as being the same. He hasn't said anything of her. I know his roommates are Oxana and Igor. It's a little perplexing. I'm spending days doing nothing, reading alone in his place. My VISA bill is now three days late; I'll be getting a notice soon, and my dad will not like that. Perhaps I can intercept it, in the manner of progress reports of old.
Last night was strange and wonderful. Chrissy managed to lighten my foul mood by taking me over to Chad's for a little recreation. I found out that Chad has recently beaten the snot out of Sean and his brother Danny over a mishap that occurred while they were at Six Flags in St Louis. So strange! I remember wanting to latch onto Sean, earlier in the summer, when I was desperate for romantic attention. I'm glad that it didn't work out; the vibe I feel from him is desperate and sad and awful -- worse than the one I feel from Zhora, even when he's in a bad mood. And Sean has been getting nothing but worse -- Chrissy says that he might be sad and embarrassed that nothing really worked out between the two of us, but I don't think that's the case. I'm only a small misfortune in the grand scheme of things, I think.
It turned out I had little to worry about, as far as last night was concerned. Vtalik and Zhora cooked and invited Chrissy and I over, and Zhora asked if I wanted to spend the night at his place, and of course I said yes, even though I knew it would mean another lonely day by myself waiting for him to come home, putting off things that I know I need to do. I will not stay long when he returns; I'm moving in tomorrow -- so much needs to be done. Perhaps he will stay on campus with me a couple nights instead of having me come back here with him. He's a strange little dude.
I miss Paige terribly, and Becky, and Tim, and Kimb, and the pets. Tumble must have been put down recently... I hope Paige is handling it well. She sent me a little note today; apparently, she is suffering from the altitude. Poor girl. I think I'll have my picture of Tumble framed, or maybe have Chrissy do some artistic wavy sketch for me also to keep. He was a good perverted old cat, my little Greek Love God.
Who is Yuliya? Should I ask about her? I'm a little nervous to do so.
This apartment is neat but grungy. Yesterday, I cleaned the kitchen a little. Zhora says that he doesn't own a broom or a vacuum. Perhaps I will find a way to secure these for him, at least to borrow. Who drives a BMW and doesn't own a broom? What a strange little fellow. His credit must be in bad shape, poor dude.
Found some music yesterday from Zhora's computer, on my usual internet rounds. I haven't made a mix CD in a couple weeks; I'm feeling too strange to be inspired -- anything I put together now wouldn't be very coherent. I've been falling asleep to Russian trance music and making love to Depeche Mode. Totally messed!
I should probably shower pretty soon. I was smarter last night than the night before, and I have some make-up, although my complexion is actually doing comparatively well today. I haven't seen or heard Igor or Oxana around this place yet, nor did I notice them yesterday. The days dissolve away while I'm here, and I'm a little lonely. It's good, though -- I have time to think, and I never have enough time to think when I'm with Zhora. I'm intimidated beyond belief; he's like a precipice, a giant crag -- my stomach drops into my toes whenever he opens his sad eyes from sleep.
There's so much to know about him, and he is not giving me much to learn from or judge.
I don't think Zhora has made an attempt to read the letters I wrote to him while in Canada -- or, if he has, he hasn't said anything, made no topical mention of the events.
Maybe I'll have a solo dance party, and then take a shower. There's nothing to eat in this house but popcorn and freezer-burned chicken breast. I'll bet I can find some orange juice, though -- that will suit me fine, until I can get home and take my hip little happy pills.
I'm going to Chicago this weekend to see Alyssa. Chrissy and Vtalik are coming with -- Zhora may be going separately to attend to some business. I miss Alyssa, the little angel. I told Chrissy last night that I feel like a little lap dog in Alyssa's presence; it would be nice to be her pet. She is transparently kind and good-natured, and has matured into a very patient and rational person, from what I can tell, although she is still a very warm individual, and capable of a sizeable empathy.
The way that Zhora drinks beer, when he drinks, is funny and attractive. He takes little violent gulps, and his Adam's apple bobs exactly two times, and then he'll wait about ten minutes before taking another drink. He always stands up to drink, and the bottle is always tilted at the same angle. Strange cute fellow!
I am in a
terrible mood. I feel like I'm creating drama that doesn't exist just so I can have an excuse to be all moody, and unfortunately, Chrissy is paying the price and has to be my sympathy buddy this evening. We're going over to Chad's pretty soon. That will be nice; I haven't seen Chad in a little while.
I am concerned. I think perhaps that Zhora doesn't enjoy spending time with me, and thinks I'm a little stupid. This does not help my cause, as I am only a rough approximation of a handsome-looking girl, at best... and I saw so many pictures of his ex-girlfriend today. She is photogenic on top of being drop-dead gorgeous; she has perfect dark blond hair; she has plump, pink lips and beautiful huge blue eyes (she actually reminds me a lot of Kiri to look at her). He said to me at one point: "You don't really want to see these pictures, huh?"
I didn't know what to say. Was he implying that I wouldn't want to see them out of jealousy? Does he
want me to be jealous? How can I, when the girl looks like a complete angel, and from the pictures, I can tell that they were completely in love? Perhaps he is still in love with her. That may be the case indeed.
Not that I mind very much. I'm
so not mature enough to have a relationship with anyone right now. I barely have a handle on who I've become in the past half year since my
last break-up, and now I'm sweating in my shorts over some cute Russian boy who may not even think I'm a nice person, or have any interest in me whatsoever other than as something to pass the time with when there's nothing better to do. I don't even know if he thinks I'm okay in bed. I mean, he gets off, but that means so little, you know?
Ah, maybe it's not as terrible as all that. I mean, he can be very affectionate, and very funny, and does and says some little nice things...
I'm too young for him. I've never felt that way before. I'm just too young, and I'm too stupid, and I'm not articulate enough or a good enough communicator to diminish the awkwardness that exists because of this damn language barrier. We speak
completely different languages, and I don't just mean English and Russian. He interprets things and communicates things in a way that is so utterly foreign to me; I never know what he's thinking, and that bothers me. I'm a control freak when it comes to my friends and lovers: I need to know at all times where I stand with certain people, and when I get a nasty surprise, well... Well, I already know what happens when I get nasty surprises. I freak out and ruin shit to pieces. And then I just plain lose interest.
But maybe that's not so bad. I could be worse about a lot of things, and I'm not. I'm better. I'm agreeable and as laid back as I can be with him, and I try to just listen when I feel that he's telling me something important, a something that may mean that he doesn't just view me as some fluffy American bitch with no brain who couldn't
possibly hope to understand any one facet of him. He
is depressed, and I've been there, and I understand how self-centered that can make a person -- not necessarily in a vain or arrogant way, but the way he slips into himself all the time; man, I can't even count how many times I've asked him what he's thinking. Am I no longer an observant person? Was I just
never perceptive? I guess if I was very perceptive, I wouldn't have to be paranoid about needing to know exactly what people think of me. I just wouldn't care. I need some self-confidence boosts, man!
I don't want to be in love -- I haven't been really ever, and I've realized that it's because I'm just not ready, and because I expect too much of people around me. But, hell, I don't know if I even want to be in intense like. It's so much work when I spend so much time worrying! Zhora asked me what I was thinking last night, and when I said I was thinking about him, he said: "No, don't do that. I'm not worth thinking about."
I told him that he is worth thinking about, because he's interesting. That's most of the truth, actually. I'm sure he is one of the most interesting people I've ever met, and he's lived such a varied life. His
two lives, as he calls them.
Kiri once told me that I'm one of the most screwed up people she's ever met; that my entire life is a lie. Granted, she said it in a fit of anger, and probably didn't mean that at all. And if she did, it's okay, because, at the time, I believed it. I'm not sure that I do anymore. Or maybe I've just changed, because Zhora just seems so much more messed up than I've ever been in my worst nightmare. And while I don't believe his life is a lie, I think that he's burying himself under a mundane existence that doesn't suit him at all. He was famous in Latvia and had a gorgeous girl on his arm; now that he's here, he's poor and he's getting the milk for free from the very average and awkward yours truly (in my defense, I'm at least pretty reliable).
If only I could figure him out. Or vice versa. I don't think he has any idea who I really am; hell, maybe he doesn't care -- he doesn't want to know. I'm expecting too much, probably. Most of the people I've cared for the most in my life are people who are open and willing to share themselves; they're easy to understand, and therefore, they're easy to help and love and depend on.
I hate being con
fuckingfused.
I will leave you with a photo:

FEEL BETTER, LITTLE DUDE![posted by m*dot @ 17:34 //

I went out to the lake last night with Zhora, Vtalik and Chrissy. Everyone was very tired. We had a few beers, smoked a little, and fished. Zhora caught a very small fish and it got hooked through the eye, and so now its name is Pedro the One-Eyed Fish. Vtalik caught two fish, but I forget their names.
Apparently, Paige has left for Denver. She'll be in Chicago soon, though... I wonder if she'll be back in town at all before she leaves for school. It's been too long a time since I've seen her loveliness!
Stayed with Zhora last night. Poor little dude was pretty beat, and he had to wake up to go to work this morning. He got up and took a shower, and I suppose I was asleep if he came back in to say goodbye, because I don't remember that he did. It was a little depressing to wake up in a strange place alone, but he left a cute little message for me on the fridge, so I suppose all is forgiven if he didn't feel like braving the M-Sak's rampant morning breath. Mmm-mm. I do have a toothbrush here now, though, so that should make things a bit easier. I really need some facewash to carry around too... My skin is HATING on me today, and I have nothing to wash it with or to cover it up. I'm not too excited that Zhora gets to see me all broken out and nasty when he comes home at five. Maybe Chrissy can bring me some of my shit if she's not working.
Last night after the lake was a little strange. Zhora was sad; he's very homesick, and his life now is so different than it was in Latvia, or even after Latvia, when he was wandering around Europe being a DJ. He tells me that he was famous enough in Latvia that people would stop him on the street, and he knows what it feels like to hold $20 000 in his little hands and
smell the money. He said to me, "It's like a previous life. So many memories." And then he hung his head. He didn't cry, though.
I told him that sometimes, in my dreams, I see glimpses of my previous lives, but I never find myself to be a woman, and so usually I get startled and wake up. He seemed to be vaguely amused; maybe he didn't understand.
Ah, yes, the language barrier is difficult, but he's still learning at an alarming rate, even though he has lost all interest in actively attempting to broaden his vocabulary and hone his grammatical skillz.
Poor Zhora. I've only seen a few people who have ever been as profoundly dissatisfied and unhappy. I told him last night that I'm on medication for depression, and he expressed some interest in getting some for himself. I'm not sure how much therapy would help him, though, since his English is a problem when he's tired and sad -- he is both of these things very often. All the time I'm with him, I'm trying very hard to make him smile, and sometimes it happens. I pity him; I've seen pictures of his friends, and their girls, and the chaste angel-girl he used to be in love with. The Russians are a beautiful race of people, all angles and length and clarity. I feel bulky and loose in face and body compared to them all. I've got my Armstrong nose, my Armstrong eyebrows. I've got meat to protect me from Scottish winters.
He might be moving. No, he IS moving -- it's just a matter of when and where. He didn't come to this goddamn country to sell flooring and piss away his life; not even to recover his bad credit. He came here to be a fucking DJ, and I'll be shit-diddled if you can do that in this town. His father is giving him options -- New York, California. Zhora himself has mentioned the possibility of just going to Chicago, and playing there, and in Champaign and in Peoria. If he did that, I could still go to his shows sometimes. When I have money. Which I never do. Thinking about this makes me a little sad, but I'm glad that he's willing to talk to me and be very honest. He told me last night that he doesn't respect
anyone anymore, and when he said it, he had his hand to his face and his eyes were closed; his Visigoth brow was furrowed.
I worry.
A little more bitching, and then I'm done with that, I promise: my appetite is doing weird shit. In the past three days, I've eaten a banana, two slices of pizza, and two french fries. I'm just not hungry, and I haven't been this light since I was in sixth grade. It's not the correct way to lose weight, and already I'm missing a bit of the roundness; it afforded my skin a slighty more firm and toned look. My belly is withering.
Something happier! Here is what the note on the fridge says:
"Have a good day! Wish you good luck!" And there's a big old smiley face in the middle with long eyelashes just like Zhora.
A funny thing: do you remember the way Edward Norton looks in Fight Club? Zhora looks just like him in that movie. What's amusing is that every movie I've watched with him here has had Edward Norton in it. It's strange to encounter vicarious vanity... I think it's cute!
I'm learning a little bit about Zhora's roommates. Both of them are Russian. The girl, I don't remember her name, works at a restaurant in town. Zhora took Ellen and I there, but I forget the name. Swingers? Slingers? Ah, yes, it has to be slingers. Decent place. The other roommate is Igor. I only know this because dude leaves his prescription bottles everywhere -- lots of empty Indomethacin bottles. There's some Valerian root on top of the fridge, and some Nicarette gum. I've never had any. I don't think I want to try it; looks pretty nasty. I think I'll just have a cigarette instead. Zhora was kind enough to leave me three or four, I think.
All right, enough. I think I'll go read some Dracula for the next six and a half hours, and I'll think of something to write to Zhora on that message board.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I got stopped on the street yesterday during my daily walk by an alarmingly beautiful black man. His skin was so dark, he was practically blue, and his hair was long and brushed out and bushy and sweet. But he was a little vulgar after I gave him a cigarette. He asked me if I have ever thought about having sex with a black man, if I've ever given head. I answered him honestly, but then I walked home and left him on his beat-up bicycle. He said he was on his way to his cousin's house to score some [cough]. Strange occurences! I'll always find myself flattered to be hit on, but there was just something strange about the fact that he didn't beat around the bush at all. I told him that he could be my friend if I ever see him again, but that I already have a boyfriend. I guess I don't really have a boyfriend. But Zhora is a pretty special little guy, and I'm satisfied with that for the moment.

"Although I don't remember most of the week...
... I got the vibe, and the vibe was good." -E.A.
I'd have to agree whole-heartedly with that statement. Canada was the most laid-back trip that has ever happened in the history of short, ill-conceived and ill-planned vacations. I wrote the Mapquest directions to my house off of a computer screen at four in the morning on less than two hours of sleep due to a naked Latvian man in my bed.
We made decent time going up; we made incredible time coming back. Chrissy enjoyed herself, I think, but she was really missing Vtalik while we were up there. I also must admit that I missed Zhora a little bit. I also must admit that I tried to quit smoking, succeeded for two days, and then sucked down a cowboy-killah as soon as we crossed the border at 3am and the cigarettes were cheap again in good old Michigan.
I bought a pack of parliament lights yesterday; I have most of my pack left, but I practically chain-smoked Zhora's while we were all at Ride the Nine last night.
Here is an excerpt from one of the letters I wrote while I was up there. Obviously, it has been a little edited:
MONDAY AFTERNOON
Erik says that my cottage is the perfect place to "shroom your fucking balls off". Erik and Chrissy just found a scrapbook/diari that many members of my family write in. The entries in the diary date back to 1985!
Everyone seems to be a little tired... we've [cougheditcoughed] a lot of [cough] and had a bit to drink, so zoning seems to be the method of choice to pass the time. I'm getting a little bit hungry. Erik is talking about making Kraft Dinner with water, since we forgot to pick up milk in town. Our time at the cottage so far has been pretty good. We're listening to some good music and just relaxing...
It's a little too cold to go swimming, since it's evening, but I'm hoping it will be warmer tomorrow. I really want to go swimming!
I'm not sure where Chrissy went; she's been outside for a long while. Maybe she is chain-smoking and missing Vtalik... I don't really want a cigarette right now at all. They're so expensive here. [Cough] was pretty good value, though.
Erik thinks I'm writing something about him, but I'm not. Where the hell is Chrissy?
Nostalgia is very powerful here. I loved this place when I was a kid, so it can never be anything but enjoyable to me.
My Aunt Donna came over here some time ago and told me to keep the [cough] discrete... I think my family is a little surprised at my habits. I was very vindictive and stubborn about being the most innocent kid in the family with regards to a lot of things when I was younger.
Do I contradict myself? So, I contradict myself. I hope my family is not ashamed of me. I hope you are doing well.
Wish you were here!
-M
P.S. Erik just said, "It feels good to scratch my hair!" -- and then he scratched his hair. Ellen just pretended to take... uhm, I lost my train of though. Oh, no, wait! Ellen just pretended to take a fake-looking iron-shaped weight and use it to iron the floor. The wooden floor.
MONDAY EVENING
We went into Powassan and got lost because I have such a terrible sense of direction. It's a civic holiday so we couldn't get milk or butter today. Gas cost me a shit-ton of money and I had to put it on my VISA because the attendant wouldn't accept American money -- I'm going to be so poor this semester! We also bought a [cough] to [cough] with while we're out here.
I wish you wer here with us! You and Vtalik! I'm not sure if you would love it here as much as I love it, but I think you could at least have a decent time. We could all go fishing! And drink "vodka with peeeeeeckle" ^^.
My old friends from Canada seemed a little bit ill-at-ease while they were visiting. I hope they didn't dislike my American friends or dislike who I've become. I haven't spent a lot of time with them since I was sixteen. It was a little strange to hang out with them, and that disappointed me considerably -- I always like to think that people I've laughed and cried with will always be able to have a good time with me, especially if they're my best buddies. It seems that you might be like that; you always speak so fondly of your best buddies back in Latvia. When will you be able to go back to visit? I'm glad that your parents are coming relatively soon (in January) - It seems like you miss them very much.
I missed my brother and my mom so much and I didn't even know it until I saw them again... well, I knew it, but it hit me hardest when I saw them.
I saw my grandma today. She was very funny and sassy, but I've been told by my brother that she is in poor health. I worry for her; I don't know what I'll do without her... but I know that seems silly because people lose their grandparents all the time when they're my age, and usually younger as well.
Right now, the others are trying to build a fire. I'm not sure they're succeeding, although I now smell burning wood. Chrissy thought that the horse-shoe pit was the fire pit earlier; they had better not be lighting a fire in that right now ^^.
I hope you are having fun right now. I'm excited to see if you bought that car today. Also, I have to remember to ask you to tell me what you said at the lake a few nights ago in Russian. You said you would tell me on Sunday, eh? I hope there isn't a fire ban right now. Hmm, I think my friends are having a hard time lighting fire. I think I'll go help them.
[LATER]
I just mixed myself a very stiff drink, but it tastes like fucking cherry coke.... mmm. We've been [coughing] for a long time, and now Chrissy and Ellen are putting out the fire. I was a little worried about falling over and breaking a bone (you know how clumsy I am!). Also, I'm rather [cough] at the moment. Man... friggin' [cough]. Damn. Okay, I'm going to go learn how to play poker.
[LATER]
Back now. I am somewhat drunk, but it's nice. Unfortunately, I'm the most fucked up one here -- I'm "more better" at getting fucked up right now, I guess. Too bad.
But I know that I will have a nice sleep -- sweetness! All right. A bit too drunk to write more. Off to sleep.
-M
I actually wrote almost every day we were up there to Zhora, but I've lost many of the sheets of paper. That's too bad. He stayed over last night and we had a lazy morning. I probably should have gotten up to cook him breakfast, but he said that he wasn't hungry; just needed a cigarette. And he was a bit smelly from drinking too much at the billiard hall and staying up late with me, so he had to shower. I don't mind his hung-over man smell that badly, though. He snores HARD.
