The Sweet & Sour Reek of Pseudo-Academia

Listening to: "I'm Afraid of Japan" - Final Fantasy

Facebook People: Apologies about this note; it's long and pretty boring -- my notes are imported into Facebook from Blogger, but the only people who can see them are those tagged in the note (and I don't tag people who aren't mentioned); I'm not a fan of inundating people's home pages with boring shit, usually.

Well, I'm back at school. So far, I'm doing a sterling job of keeping up, but that isn't saying much, as I've been here less than a week. I've met some professors who seem to promise topical engagement, but a couple (math, american lit) who seem to have procured a monotonous drone after decades of teaching apparently mostly apathetic students. We'll see how they go. I've already done most of the reading due Monday for American Lit, and I'm not very optimistic about the anthology we're using as our main 'textbook' -- the introduction is vague and useless. I think it's good to be given more questions than answers with an introduction, especially one that focuses on survey cultural and political shifts within the time period of literature we're studying, but goddamn... There are three paragraphs devoted to "African Americans" versus four focusing solely on the automobile as a shift in the direction of 'serious' writing toward 'migrant' modes of thought. Hmm. Cars, Harlem Renaissance; cars, Harlem Renaissance -- their choice of focus is a bit odd and disconcerting. There's a lot about modernist theory in the introduction, but I'm struggling with some aspects of the explanation already; I hope the professor is not disenchanted enough to refuse to listen to a string of questions on Monday - after class, of course.

I feel bad about taking up professors' extra time; I know from having one as a father that it can be a bit annoying to be held up with high-strung undergrads on non-class time when there are graduate students and research proposals to be focusing on (not to say that my dad doesn't enjoy engaging the undergrads in his field). Anyway -- I feel worse taking up 300 students' time with subject matter that they're probably not interested in. I suppose it would be different if my classes had fewer students, or if I was in a more competitive program at a more competitive university -- but I'm at peace with the collective attitude of the ISU student-body, and that attitude involves taking up class-time with material that we're going to be tested on, not asking questions and expecting answers that expand on it.

I'm actually not too bummed about math. I found out today that Phil is in that class with me, and that's a comfort, even though I can't sit with him (there's a seating plan for attendance purposes). It'll be good to have someone to study with when the material becomes more challenging. As Chrissy said, it's easier for two people to know 100 percent of any applicable material between them than it is for one to immediately grasp it all. Plus, Phil is a generally agreeable person to be around, of course.

I'm excited about my criminal justice and philosophy classes for politically selfish reasons -- I enjoy the challenge of being taught classes that involve analytical thought about contemporary issues by teachers who are not aligned politically with me, but I still tend to be grateful when that's not the case. My philosophy teacher read us an essay today comparing Hitler's early career to George W.'s. It's always entertaining to be able to look back from the front row and immediately see the political distribution of students based solely on their facial expressions. I'm actually not really certain about my criminal justice teacher's political orientation, but she is, from what I can tell up to this point, a lovely feminist. Her focus within criminology is on forced prostitution in the United States, but right now she's doing a study on women in the Normal police force.

My semantics professor is going to make that class a lot less boring than I initially thought it might be, albeit a lot more challenging than I thought it would be, too. He teaches from an Orwellian perspective, and his focus so far is on how governments use language to suggest certain underlying and ingrained social meanings. Coolness!

I'm very optimistic about this semester. We'll see if I (and my professors and peers) can sustain my intellectual passion, though. The support I've gotten from my friends (Chrissy, Teryn, Paige and in an extremely large way her dad) has been extremely encouraging -- I no longer doubt that it's highly possible for me to do very well academically.

In other news, nothing romantic is on the horizon for the M-Sak. It's nothing that I'm concerned about from day-to-day, but I've decided that my New Year's Resolution to stay single for a year was more of a gut call than something that was rationally thought out as a means of self-improvement. I discussed it with Chrissy, and she suggested that putting a time-limit on it was potentially destructive -- I could miss a good opportunity this year, or I could feel more pressure once it's over to find someone to be with before I'm absolutely ready to. I'm not necessarily looking for a rebound, but at the same time I don't think it would hurt to get a failed, frustratingly prolonged yet non-committal and bitter fling out of my system. We'll see what happens in 2007.

Peace.

That's Just So Penile...

I had a productive day and a relaxing night. Elation! I actually went to all of my classes, set up meetings with the professors I needed to, and I think I did well on my Human Sexuality test... Awesomeness! If I just step it up a notch, I'm sure I can salvage my semester at least a little bit!

Around dinner-time, I went downstairs to get something to eat while Teryn was on the phone. Chad called; he, Michael and Lunch Box ended up coming to pick me up. I got a belated birthday gift from Chad that makes me very happy! We just sat around, and I got to have a nice chat with him and Amanda. Chad is going to go to the court house tomorrow to take care of his dad's death certificate, so he'll gain access to what he's inheriting... With a small portion of the money, he's going to get the BMW logo tattooed on his right elbow, but instead of "BMW" it's going to say "DAD". He asked me if I would like to come with him. I felt weirdly honored -- it'll be good practice for me too, since I eventually want a sizeable tattoo on my back. I need to work up my courage. My family seal is rather intricate, and I'm actually torn between that design and a slightly different one -- technically, the Irish clan is a more recent version of the Scottish clan, from which all Armstrongs are descended, so they have a couple of variations on their seal. I'm a fan of the motto, at least, and I think it would be something pretty inspirational and beautiful to have on my body. We'll see if I have the resources/courage to get it in a few years, though.

Anyway, Little Dude picked me up from Chad's, and we went to Steak&Shake to have good talks and eat mediocre food. When he drove me home, he parked and asked me to sit in the car with him for a little while to listen to parts of a new mp3 cd he just burned for himself. I can tell from listening to one of the mixes he made on equipment in Latvia of a few of his favorite songs that he's a talented beat manager.

He asked me to check out prices for hotels in and around Carbondale -- I'm still leaning toward Motel 6 in Marion because of the price... I'm a little bit worried, just because Swedish has rehearsal all day Saturday before her show, so I'm going to have to figure out what Zhora and I can do with our day. I know what I want to do -- go to the university gallery and the museum... but I'm not sure if Zhora would be down for that. There are also apparently some pretty beautiful parks and public gardens down there. Enh, I'll talk to him about it.

Zhora's family is coming to visit in November -- his dad, his mom, and his grandma. His dad is looking for a place to rent over here -- apparently, he's going to be staying in town for six months! I'm so excited for Zhora! I know he's missed his family terribly during the eight months he's been here.

Hm. Sleepy.

Edit: I received postage and pictures from Tim today... I'd better get to work burning CDs!

Stalker Fan

Apparently, I have become so delinquent in my movie-rental skillz that the Movie Fan has taken to harrassing my roommate while I'm out. Good thing I didn't give them my cell number. Dang!

Last night was pretty laid-back. I saw Kiri for the first time in months. Teryn and I spent a bit of time with her here at the dorm and then Little Dude and I took her out to Denny's. Right now, her and Paige are hanging out. Apparently, I have to wait until tomorrow to get my piece of the Paige Pie. Such is life, I suppose, when one has out-of-town visitors with too much to do and too many people to see. I'll entertain myself tonight by showering, going to Chad's, and maybe calling Little Dude later, although he'll probably get off work after eleven since he didn't have to go in until four today.

I stayed over at Zhora's last night, surprisingly against my initial will -- I was pretty bone tired last night, but I didn't know if I could come back to the dorm because Erik just got back in town last night and... yeah. Other circumstances arose that also made it impossible for me to go to my dad's to crash as well. Zhora's roommate seemed to be rather uncomfortable with the prospect of me spending the night in the apartment at all, so I ended up sleeping alone in the guest room. I got a queen-sized mattress to myself, but still -- not the ending to the night I had hoped for. Fortunately, Igor had work early this morning, so a little trans-room sneaking was done after that. I ended up sneezing (one of my huge, crazy sneezes) at a completely inopportune time, too. Oh well.

My sneezes sound like this: "HRRGHHRAAAAAAAAAARGH!!" What's startling about them to some people is that there's no lead-up to my bigger sneezes. No "ha" in the "ha-choo". Basically, it's just a huge, wet yell. Igor got home from work earlier than expected because he was tired, so that was awkward...

UUUUUUUUUNITY!

Had a predictable albeit enjoyable night tonight. I ended up not only watching Mrs. Doubtfire (possibly one of the greatest movies of all time), but also seeing Coming To America with Teryn, Zhora, and Phil.

I went downstairs to pick up Phil from his job at about five to eleven. Unfortunately, the xerox machine was going crazy, so he had to placate a few dissatisfied students, and then write up the xerox issue so that a girl could get some money back, so he ended up have to stay a couple minutes later than when he usually closes. Poor guy!

I think I'm turning into a bad influence on poor Zhora -- I've seen him pretty much every night this week, and all of those nights have been pretty late, so he hasn't been getting much sleep between me, his two jobs, and sundry other things. I feel bad because I wanted him to get a good night's sleep tonight since my party is tomorrow -- I don't want him to be all falling asleep during that! But hopefully, he'll have a couple hours between jobs to nap a little bit.

I'm excited for my little party! It won't really be anything but a few people hanging out at Chad's, but still! I'm anxious to see how Amanda is doing with her school stuff, considering she's been working so much. She's been exhausted the past few times I've been over there to visit.

Anyway, I have to get up and do some homework in the morning, so I should probably cut myself short before I get carried away with any more blogging nonsense.

You Don't Even Have Good Credit!

It's been a couple of days since I last updated, so I figure it is time. As in, Lion King Rafiki It Is Time, bitches.

Not really a lot of news to report. Teryn and I are taking a trendy new liquid vitamin supplement called Vemma. It is seriously the shit, although it is a little bit expensive. I'm thinking of remarking on my stress-levels and physical well-being with every blog entry I make, just to track how good it is making me feel... because, damn, it seems to be doing its thang pretty well!

I actually think that a lot of college students, especially freshmen, who come from stable three-meals-a-day families feel a lot more stress at school just because they're neglecting their bodies. I'm not really one to talk much about this, since my eating habits are anything but healthy, but you'd be surprised what a little regular supplementation can do.

I got in a mad tickle-fight with Zhora last night, and now my wrists hurt. Part of Little Dude's charm is that he can be ferociously child-like. Did you know that the Russian word for armpit, directly translated, means "under-mouse"? And that the Russian word for "porn movie" sounds conspicuously like the Russian word for armpit? Crazy stuff. I think he was just being goofy and affectionate with me because he upset me earlier by appearing to pick up a girl at Ride the Nine while hanging out with Vtalik and me... but, it turned out that she's just a friend of his. I had Vtalik drive me home because I didn't just want to sit around and sulk, but Zhora called as soon as I got in pretty much and asked to come over. At least I know now that I'm not just being used for sex -- he has to come to me for good tickles, too!

He said that if he doesn't have to work his second job today, he'll come over and nap with me for a little while... He really hasn't been getting enough sleep for these past couple weeks, and he actually makes really good conversation when he's drowsy. Weirdness.

Life is good!

Byaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Edit: What the H! I have this statcounter thing on my sidebar, and I check it periodically. I've got the settings refined enough so that I'm no longer getting indications that random people from Singapore somehow stumble onto this page; I pretty much can recognize every IP/location/visitor path as someone I know, as creepy as that may sound. But there's this ONE PERSON! The IP is 74-134-253-197, and the address shows up as localized somewhere around Louisville, Kentucky. This person visits my blog consistently -- usually around once or twice a day. I'm thinking that since the geo-tracker can be a bit messed up sometimes, that it's probably someone in Southern Illinois -- or someone down there in that direction. Craziness! Who are you, mystery visitor? Seriously!

See, Roses Really Smell Like Poo-Poo-Poo...

The past two nights have been a bit of the same-old, same-old routine. The night before last, I ended up at Zhora's watching him and Vtalik try to fix a belt tensioner pulley that had snapped off during Little Dude's delivery work (that poor BMW), and then we watched V for Vendetta and visited with Zhora's roommates Igor and Oxana. I've decided that they're both really cool. Oxana is incredibly bright and attentive, and Igor is very talkative and personable. He wanted to hear all about my time in Germany and discuss my classes with me, and tell me all about his unorthodox upbringing in Russia. Very cool.

Last night, Vtalik, Zhora, and I played pool at Ride the Nine for the first time in what feels like a long while, but has probably only been about two weeks. I actually held my own this time! In fact, I beat Zhora at nine-ball three times, even though he kept trying to smack my butt with his cue every time I took a shot, silly guy. He also seemed pretty interested in playing with my hair last night, which was a little strange, because I'm not used to someone's fingers sliding through my thick, glossy mane in public. Something about it just seems a little too... Hmm, I don't want to say erotic, because that's taking it too far, but intimate at least -- for a public setting, that is. I'm not going to pretend I didn't enjoy it, even though he messed up my ponytail something awful.

Tonight, I'm heading to a poetry slam at the Coffeehouse with Teryn and Alyssa. I got invited by my new friend Rob... This reminds me that I have to finish burning a mix CD for him and downloading some of the music he was telling me about so that we can talk about it at some point. I always love discussing music that my friends are passionate about; it makes it a lot easier for me to like a lot of different things, and I tend to pride myself on having a rather broad musical taste (although I would hardly call it indiscriminate).

Other than that, not much is going on. Kerry just stopped in for about an hour to say hello; it's the first time Teryn and I have seen her all semester! Hopefully, we will see more of her soon. She invited us to see a gallery opening at Wesleyan tonight, but unfortunately we already have the Coffeehouse plans... but I'm sure we'll get out and do something cool sometime soon!

I continue to get extremely weird, semi-vicious comments on Facebook from Kiri, but I think it's just because she's going through a hard time right now and needs someone she doesn't really care about to lash out on. That'll teach me to make snide comments about StalkerBook's ability to give me somewhat personal relationship information about people I haven't really interacted with in a good number of months!

I Was Born To Spit It Til You Git It and Express Myself

It must be getting pretty close to the full moon round hurr. I had a beautiful and eventful day yesterday. Teryn and I spent a lot of time at the Coffeehouse earlier in the day. We met a cool guitar-player named Rob who has traveled around Mississippi and likes to finger-pick the blues. He had a lot of nice things to say to us. We exchanged phone numbers and I'm in the process of organizing a few mix CDs for him.

Teryn and I went to both the Transpace gallery and the University Gallery opening. We saw some beautiful pieces by one Fay Lee at the latter opening -- they were done on lots of grid paper. The pieces were kind of like massive, complex tapestry-esque connect-the-dots... and when Teryn and I got close to look at the work, we noticed that it had all been done free-hand! We were astonished! At the Transpace gallery, we saw a very cool photo series about furniture in very regional, rustic landscapes by a photographer named Jacob DeGeal. Both Teryn and I especially liked the unsanded table sitting in a dormant corn field, although the larger print we saw of the picture that is currently his myspace profile image is also very cool. Furniture in nature: Totally sweet.

We were going to head to the Olivia Newton John Wayne Newton show, but we met Phil on the way, and we hadn't been that excited to donate to a "benefit" concert that was all about sending the lead singer's crush away to LA. Lame! So, instead of going to the Coffeehouse for a second time, we came back up to the room to hang out with Philtron. I drew a picture of two flowers having sex, flower-style, and Phil came up with a haiku for it. The haiku goes like this:

Flowers having sex
Quite indiscriminately:
Watch as they get off!

I also attempted to do a semi-accurate rendering of Phil's sarcastic right eye, but it didn't really work out too well, because I'm not an artist. But I am happy to have a sketchbook, though. I bought it at the Alamo II yesterday with Teryn.

Full moon related behavior included but was not limited to Chrissy deciding one day after she was thinking of breaking up with her boyfriend that she is now going to perhaps marry him for his green card (but next summer would be the earliest it would happen, donchaknow). I had myself a little freak-out, just because I'm so against the idea of marriage in general, but especially for people my age or younger, and especially for reasons that don't take into account the emotional and financial costs of marriage and divorce. Marriage is an outdated and over-socialized originally religious farce, in my opinion. I personally will never marry, and although Chrissy agrees with a lot of my views on marriage, she thinks that exploiting it doesn't make a difference. Because, you know, using a social construct that you don't believe in for your own twisted purposes, thereby corrupting it even more than it already is... Since when is there anything wrong with that?

Alyssa needs to call that child and have a little chat with her, methinks.

Speaking of Alyssa, she came over last night. Her and I flew the coup and went to Chad's to hang out. Amanda ended up whupping Chad's ASS in a Halo 2 tournament. It was a good thing to witness. I got to see Michael as well, although Lunch Box was suspiciously absent. Amanda was wearing a very interesting and gorgeous shirt. She's so svelte that even a potato sack would look good on her, though.

Tonight, I'm going over to Alyssa's house to help her babysit her brother and his little friends. We are going to go on a sunset picnic. It'll be sweet as hell.

Little Dude and I have to return some DVDs in the next couple days. I keep wondering how long it's going to take him to request that we rent "Blast from the Past" again. Seriously, he almost pees every time he even thinks about that movie for too long.

Late last night was pretty cool. Alyssa left after watching a very cool movie called Kinky Boots with Teryn and myself, then Teryn and I stayed up late. We were both a little tired, so we got a little delirious, and we made fun of each other, because I was trying to hold a conversation with her and have a few online at the same time, and things got a bit confusing and funny. I had a very decent sleep, and I'm full with tasty waffle.

Hurray, weekend!

Fortified With These Essential Vitamins

Yesterday was a bit topsy-turvy. Teryn is engaged in an epic battle of heroic scale against her parents -- regarding a certain Chicago issue. Well, actually, that's a bit of a stretch. I think she's just a little disappointed that she isn't allowed to go, and yet she somehow still manages to understand where her parents are coming from. My opinion? Teryn's parents don't know how good they have it, and restricting her at this point just seems... well... pointless.

Anyway.

Saw Zhora again last night, albeit only briefly. He drove me to Vtalik's to give him the CDs I made for him. Vtalik was very pleased. Zhora gave me some garlic bread. We sat and talked and smoked for about ten minutes, and Zhora told me about this one time, during the full moon, when he sleep-walked.

On the way back, he asked me if I was sad. I said that I wasn't, which is true, but he didn't seem very convinced. He said, "You look sad."

How unnerving. Since when does Little Dude concern himself with the way I feel? Just short weeks ago, he let me cry for ninety miles without uttering so much as a word of comfort, and now, all of a sudden, he's wondering if I'm 'sad'? Crazy kid.

I woke up to a gigantic mea culpa on Facebook this morning. Sucks to be the founder of that thing right now, I'll tell you. I have to say, though, that I agree at least partially with the masses. Of course, there are some things that Facebook is useful for, like alerting me to my ex's recent relationship status change. But I really don't need to know that Mike Brown just removed "Family Guy" from his favorite TV shows, you know? If Facebook wants to turn itself into the greatest, biggest gossip tool ever, then it needs to limit its feed to relevant fields. I want to see messages like, "Liesl Pereira totally just denied a friendship request from Marion!". See, that's juicy... although it didn't happen; I'm actually quite happily bonded through Facebook with young Liesl.

Hopefully, Facebook gets the point now. It's not that I'm not interested in invading my growing network's privacy and finding out about all the juicy stuff going on in their lives... Because, dude... Totally saves time! There are just some things that nobody in their right mind gives a damn about.
