Listening to: "Toy Boat" - Yoko Ono w/ Antony and the Johnsons
I've been a little busy lately. Classes are going reasonably well, and I don't really have all that much to report. I've become one of the more proficient BK workers in a meager four weeks' worth of shifts, progress with which I'm satisfied, seeing as I'll probably be working there throughout the summer (as my third job).
I have my first test in Criminal Justice tomorrow morning at nine. We'll see how that goes.
Mom is flying down from Toronto to Chicago on the 9th; I've found a sub for my shift that day so I can meet her at the airport. We'll be in Chicago until the following Tuesday; I'm trying to find some fun stuff for us to do via chicagoreader.com. After that, I'm heading to KC with Dan on the Wednesday of break to pick up Chrissy. I'll probably be in that area until Friday. I'm glad I've got most of my plans sorted out; I'm just a little worried about money. My mom's not the richest person, and I don't want her paying for every meal and every single thing we do, so I'll need some money for Chicago. My dad just paid a $100 debt for me, which I want to pay back relatively soon. My cousin wants to take me on a trip to Palestine in May with a student group out of York University in Toronto -- not exactly the safest vacation, but I definitely want to go if I can scrape up the cash. Given that I have so many things requiring money, you'd think that I wouldn't be inclined to run across the street to the nearest gas station as soon as my paycheck comes in, but alas, I am now $8 poorer and three packs of Camels richer. I need to start rolling these things myself, save some cash.
So, Chief Illiniwek is finally history, huh? I've been reading a lot of commemorative bullshit about the whole debacle. Honestly, why would U of I
want to commemorate decades of racism-laced representation? I'm even more confused about why some of the people I know and view as normally perfectly reasonably people are so emotional about it; hello, we don't do shows in black face anymore -- how is donning some ridiculously flamboyant poor imitation of Native American garb and prancing around like a goddamned idiot for an audience completely
devoid of Native Americans any better -- or any different? Just because most people in Southern Illinois have never run into one of the nations' people before doesn't mean that they don't exist -- no, white people didn't manage to
completely obliterate them for all their efforts; fancy that! There are actually still some people who are offended that their heritage is being commercialized and mocked by the descendants of white settlers who murdered, raped, and needlessly relocated them. Commemorating such a symbol as the Chief seems to be pretty indecent, bigoted, ignorant, and completely insensitive. People down here just have no idea how insulting mascots like the Chief are to the people such sporting symbols
mock. A basketball team on a reservation near my hometown renamed themselves the Fighting Whities in protest against similarly derogatory and defamatory mascots in Canada -- just to highlight how ridiculous the whole tradition is, no matter how ingrained it is in American sports culture.
Well, whatev.
I've been feeling really kind of distant lately; I don't find it difficult to get worked up about issues that I feel strongly about, but I've found myself to be really put off by strung out people and their personal issues lately. I can't help but to feel a twinge of annoyance every time I walk past some poor blubbering sophomore complaining to her BFF about her insensitive boyfriend's recent antics. I think part of this has come from hanging out with Dan so much -- I don't know his friends well enough to be actively involved in any of their drama, and from an objective perspective, that crap always seems incredibly petty -- especially when the people involved are constantly bitching about how strung out they are about it and yet withhold detailed information about whatever situation is apparently bothering them just because they fucking
know that it is too ridiculous for any normal person to even break a sweat about. Dan himself is incredibly chill and easy to get along with.
It's not that I haven't been stressing out a little about my own personal issues lately, but I've found it to be much more cathartic to simply work through them on my own or to make constructive commentary on them -- not giving in to the destructive, petty emotional indulgence most people actually mistake for true 'angst' has been really helpful to me in keeping things on an even keel lately. Maybe part of this feeling is also due to the fact that Teryn has been roped into helping with set construction with a bunch of The-thes for a measly credit. She works ten- to twelve-hour shifts every Friday and Saturday until April 1st, and I've already heard enough about the personalities she's interacting with (horror stories!) for me to feel immense pity for her. Maybe this is singular to ISU theater kids, but
GODDAMN, they are FUCKING ANNOYING, PETTY, SAD PEOPLE! If someone stubs their toe, it's enough to fuel terse, hushed gossip for an entire day! Well, okay, maybe it's not that ridiculous, but it honestly seems to be at least approaching that level. It makes me glad that I gave up theater completely after high school. I can't imagine having to deal with such high strung people on a daily basis.
That said, I just saw a wonderful production of the V-Monologues, and I'm pretty interested in getting into it next year. ISU's was a pretty independent production, and I think that's the only type of theater that could attract even a smidgen of interest from me in terms of acting or teching these days. Doing theater with people who aren't tangled up in the
institution of theater could actually be, oh, I don't know, relatively "angst"-free and fun??
We'll see, my peeps.

I'm going to prequalify this entry by mentioning that I am on a somewhat high prescribed dose of codeine right now. After a day of peeing every three minutes and sundry clinic/hospital visits, the consensus is that I have a serious kidney infection of the unknown variety. In fact, had I waited a day longer to get it treated, I would probably be rendered quite immobile by intense fits of chills, a high fever, and possible seizures. Ick. Anyway, the antibiotics are supposed to be doing their thing, but I have to go see my NP on Tuesday to discuss the lab results of my infected urine sample. Hopefully, it's nothing too serious. Because, damn. I can't afford to miss any more classes than I already have. I'm behind as it is, and haven't really had an excuse for it up until now.
Hung out with Little Dude and Phil tonight, despite excrutiating pain and an even more intense codeine high. I fell asleep while they were playing Soul Calibur II.
I should probably go to bed. I have to get up early tomorrow to write some stuff for my Creative Writing class. I also have to go to the library to get some books on reserve to write a paper. And then I have to practice my balls off for my first Oral Interp performance. I might even print out notes for my Human Sexuality class, if Teryn's printer is now working. It would be sweet if it was.

You Don't Even Have Good Credit!
It's been a couple of days since I last updated, so I figure it is time. As in, Lion King Rafiki
It Is Time, bitches.
Not really a lot of news to report. Teryn and I are taking a trendy new liquid vitamin supplement called
Vemma. It is seriously the shit, although it is a little bit expensive. I'm thinking of remarking on my stress-levels and physical well-being with every blog entry I make, just to track how good it is making me feel... because, damn, it seems to be doing its thang pretty well!
I actually think that a lot of college students, especially freshmen, who come from stable three-meals-a-day families feel a lot more stress at school just because they're neglecting their bodies. I'm not really one to talk much about this, since my eating habits are anything but healthy, but you'd be surprised what a little regular supplementation can do.
I got in a
mad tickle-fight with Zhora last night, and now my wrists hurt. Part of Little Dude's charm is that he can be ferociously child-like. Did you know that the Russian word for armpit, directly translated, means "under-mouse"? And that the Russian word for "porn movie" sounds conspicuously like the Russian word for armpit? Crazy stuff. I think he was just being goofy and affectionate with me because he upset me earlier by appearing to pick up a girl at Ride the Nine while hanging out with Vtalik and me... but, it turned out that she's just a friend of his. I had Vtalik drive me home because I didn't just want to sit around and sulk, but Zhora called as soon as I got in pretty much and asked to come over. At least I know now that I'm not just being used for sex -- he has to come to me for good tickles, too!
He said that if he doesn't have to work his second job today, he'll come over and nap with me for a little while... He really hasn't been getting enough sleep for these past couple weeks, and he actually makes really good conversation when he's drowsy. Weirdness.
Life is good!
Byaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Edit: What the H! I have this statcounter thing on my sidebar, and I check it periodically. I've got the settings refined enough so that I'm no longer getting indications that random people from Singapore somehow stumble onto this page; I pretty much can recognize every IP/location/visitor path as someone I know, as creepy as that may sound. But there's this ONE PERSON! The IP is 74-134-253-197, and the address shows up as localized somewhere around Louisville, Kentucky. This person visits my blog consistently -- usually around once or twice a day. I'm thinking that since the geo-tracker can be a bit messed up sometimes, that it's probably someone in Southern Illinois -- or someone down there in that direction. Craziness! Who are you, mystery visitor? Seriously!

I Watch The L Word On Showtime... BYAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Feeling good this morning, although I have a test in human sexuality later which I haven't studied for, and a class in an hour that I haven't attended in, like, a week, and am thinking of skipping yet again. Probably shouldn't, though.
Last night was lovely. Little Dude took me out to Steak 'N Shake, where we discussed an assload of stuff... At one point, he was telling me about archaic Russian greetings, and about how much easier it would be for him to read women if they came back in vogue. Later on, we started talking about his perceived understanding that American women don't like forward men, and then he gave me a chaste little kiss good-night... At which point, he informed me of his desire to
stay the night. Heh.
Ugh, I'm definitely going to skip that class again, I just know it. All right -- as of next week, no more skipping Creative Writing for me, no matter how dire the circumstances. I can't afford to fail an English class, no siree bob.
Do you ever get the urge to just give up on your current longterm plans? Like, not necessarily letting a dream die -- just taking a good, long look at what you've been planning to do with your life in the next five or ten years and saying, "Fuck it. Time for Plan B." And I don't just mean when you've fucked up and realized you might be pregnant, either (if that's the case, I should inform you that you'll need a prescription from your physician for Plan B until 2007 -- sorry!).
Seriously, though, part of me just wants to drop out, get a low-paying job -- maybe I could host again, or even serve. Maybe I could work at Subway, or at a Wal-Mart. There's just something so alluring about not having to worry about work outside the context of work, whereas school-related worries permeate my entire existence at this point. Honestly, it can't be that difficult to just
live. I can get a job, get a small place, get a shitty little car... These are all things that I kind of actually
want over the doubtful promise of financial security looming a decade or so in the future.
But will I feel like a sell-out? Will I find myself in an environment wherein I constantly feel surrounded by idiots and come to hate myself for IQ-based prejudices that I might not be able to help, having been the proud first human production of a couple of high-achieving college graduates?
Ech, I don't really know what's going on with my head lately. I'm so completely complacent in regard to school at the moment, that I consider having had a number of orgasms last night to be good and fine studying for my first Human Sexuality exam. Yes, I know the advantages and drawbacks of the missionary position; yes, I understand the societal pressures telling me that sex isn't good unless I work to achieve orgasm in both myself and my partner, preferably simultaneously; yes, I understand the male and female cycles of arousal. For some reason, I also know that most people begin fondling their genitals for pleasure as early as infancy! Right now, though, the knowledge that seems most important is that I'm wrapped up in a blanket that smells like cologne and erect penis, which means it's time to spend $3.00 of my hard-earned summer money to make it smell like artificial spring again.
Zhora and I almost went to Hooters last night, but it was closed. I would say that I agreed to go purely out of morbid curiosity, having never been before, but honestly, I wouldn't have minded seeing some nice perky tatas in some cute little shirts, or some nice perky butts in some cute little shorts. Does this make me somewhat chauvenistic? I sure sound like a narrrsty old letch. It's just that, when I'm looking for good company, I look for good company; sometimes I just want to see some great T&A, you know? Zhora has no butt; it makes me value more the time in my personal history during which I had a nice, plump one to nap on. Le Sigh.
Since Zhora and I ended up at Steak 'N Shake last night instead of Hooters, I contented myself by flirting outrageously with our waitress -- a shapely, accentless Indian girl who called me variations of "honey", "sweetheart", and "ma'am" for the hour Zhora and I loitered around with our meager food orders. I certainly wasn't putting on a show for him by any means, but I was at least satisfied that he didn't seem to mind my eyes taking in some demurely clothed, small and meaty breasts. Made me hungry enough to devour a Crisco melt!
